Cycling up Coll de Canes - 26.06.19

So, once we’ve cycled Mont Ventoux in France, we’ll be heading on another road trip and making our way down to Spain to cycle up another mountain!

Unfortunately, time will be against us. I only have one week to head from Yorkshire, to Dover, down to Ventoux in France, across to Spain and all the way back again! But luck is on our side. After a fair bit of research, we’ve found a mountain at the top of Spain which has been featured many times in the Volta a Catalunya, but most importantly, it’s been featured once in the third Grand Tour, the Vuelta a Espana which took place in 2005. It may only have featured once, but that’s enough for me to be able to tick off this challenge.

The challenge for us with this mountain is that apart from research, we don’t know anything about it. I can’t rely on my dad’s or sister’s knowledge, it really will be completely new to us. But that’s the challenge I guess.

What we do know is that it’s been described as a ‘pleasant climb in the Garrotxa area of Catalunya, which links the towns of Olot and Ripoll. I’m not sure which way we’ll go yet, either from Olot to Riploll or from Riploll to Olot. The research also says that the mountain now carries little traffic, the gradients are mostly gentle and although the climb is covered mostly by trees, the scenery is picturesque near the top.

To top the week off, I’ll also have to contend with my fear of descending the mountains. I am petrified of going downhill, so to be attempting the descents – on the wrong side of the road – will really be something

The second mini challenge is to help my parents out. As we’ll be driving a VERY LONG way, I’ve said that I’ll do my fair share of the driving. However, I’ve NEVER driven abroad before! I’ve cycled abroad before and my mind literally couldn’t cope when we had to cycle the wrong way around a roundabout as it felt so unnatural so I’m quite scared to be honest! To top it off, I’ve never driven an automatic before!!

Fingers crossed, we get there in one piece!
